Fri 28 May. Standing camp at Camp Kariong
commences and the venturers arrive and set up their tents. We then
watch movies by the use of a petrol generator until late at night,
or possibly very early in the morning. Temperatures drop to about +3
degrees C at midnight.
Sat 29 May. Late in the morning (aprox 8:30am)
when it starts to get warmer in this seemingly inhospitable place we
get up to have a hearty meal of cereal and toast. We then
discover that the gas fittings on the BBQ are different to the ones
that we have, so no toast this morning. After breakfast we go for a
short stroll to fill our water bottles and plot our course on the
map. We go back to camp and pack some bits for lunch and then we set
off. About 45 minutes of following a compass bearing later and we
are at our first waypoint. After more skilled navigation we reached
our next waypoint, the entry gate to the camp, with great accuracy -
We came out onto the road at a point about 6 m from the gate. After
a relaxing lunch we cut the rest of the course short as we ran into
very dense bushland. We then went past some aboriginal rock carvings
on our return leg through some regrowing bushland. Once back at camp
we started to prepare dinner (spaghetti) as Chris, a leader at
1st Hurstville had gone and
acquired the correct gas fitting we needed. Some of us went to use
the hot showers on site. After dinner it was time for some more
movies and then into bed.
Sun 30 May. When we got up in the morning we
had the pleasure of a visit from Norm (the camp warden) who told us
that last night the temperature had dropped to about -4 degrees
C!! After breakfast we went and dug up and repositioned the campsite
map sign as a favor to Norm. After this we packed up the last of our
gear, got into the cars and went home - to a good sleep.
